Category 02 — feeder & service cable
We buy surplus SER, SEU, URD and USE-2 cable
Service and feeder cable is where a lot of Mississippi surplus value hides. A panel upgrade that changed direction leaves a partial reel of 4/0 SER. A subdivision phase that was shelved leaves URD on the rack. A commercial service that was upsized leaves SEU that nobody wants to store for another year.
We buy those lots in copper and aluminum, at the sizes that actually get used on Mississippi services: #2 through 4/0, plus 250 MCM and larger where the job called for it.
The four constructions we see most
SER and SEU are service entrance cables with a rated jacket and an internal bare ground or neutral configuration; URD is underground residential distribution cable, usually aluminum and often dual-rated; USE-2 is underground service entrance cable rated for direct burial. They overlap in purpose but not in how a buyer values them, so naming the construction correctly matters.
| Construction | Typical use | What helps the quote |
|---|---|---|
| SER | Service entrance, round, 3- or 4-conductor with ground | Conductor count, size, jacket condition |
| SEU | Service entrance, ungrounded conductors with bare neutral | Size, footage, whether the bare messenger is intact |
| URD | Underground residential distribution, direct burial | Aluminum or copper, dual rating, reel tag |
| USE-2 | Underground service entrance, wet rated | Footage, sun exposure history, jacket photo |
What changes the value
Conductor count and size drive most of it. A 4/0-4/0-2/0-2/0 aluminum SER reel with 200 feet left is a different proposition from a 2-2-2-4 with 40 feet. After that comes jacket condition: URD that has sat in UV for three years will have a chalky, checked surface, and USE-2 that was buried and dug back up needs to be described as such.
- SER and SEU in copper and aluminum
- URD and URD dual-rated with concentric neutrals
- USE-2 direct-burial service cable
- Mobile home feeder and ranch feeder assemblies
- Partial reels from panel upgrades, service changes and cancelled subdivisions
Reels that have been outside
Mississippi heat and humidity are hard on cable jackets, and plenty of good URD has spent a year on a pallet behind a shop. That does not automatically disqualify a lot. Send a photo of the outer wrap and a close-up of the jacket surface, and note whether the reel was tarped. We will tell you what we can do rather than guessing.
Questions
Feeder & Service Cable questions
Do you buy URD that has already been buried and dug up?
Sometimes. Dug cable needs an honest description of jacket damage and the length actually recovered. Photograph the ends and any scraped sections. Cable recovered cleanly from a cancelled subdivision is usually a better lot than cable pulled out of an energized trench.
Can you quote a mixed pallet of SER and URD?
Yes, as long as each reel or coil is identified by type and size. Mixed pallets are common at the end of a job, and a simple list — type, size, footage, reel count — is enough for us to review the whole lot together.
Do you buy aluminum mobile home feeder?
Yes. Mobile home feeder and ranch feeder assemblies are bought when the conductors and jacket are intact. Note the conductor configuration and footage, since these are usually sold in fixed lengths.
