Buying surplus wire & cable across Mississippi

Category 07 — medium and high voltage

We buy surplus 5kV, 15kV, 25kV, 35kV and 69kV cable

Medium-voltage cable is the highest-value wire on most Mississippi industrial sites and the easiest to leave sitting too long. A substation upgrade, a feeder relocation or a cancelled plant expansion can strand thousands of feet of 15kV concentric-neutral cable on reels that nobody wants to move twice.

We buy those reels, from 5kV distribution cable through 69kV and above, in EPR and XLPE constructions, shielded or concentric neutral, full or partial.

EPR, XLPE and concentric neutral

EPR is a thermoset rubber insulation with a long history in industrial plants and utility distribution. XLPE is cross-linked polyethylene, the dominant modern insulation for 15kV through transmission class. Concentric neutral cable carries a helical copper neutral over the insulation shield; tape-shield cable uses a copper tape instead and is common in substation and plant work.

For a quote we need the voltage class, conductor size and material, insulation type, shield or neutral construction, and footage. The reel tag normally carries all of it. If the tag is gone, the jacket print and the cable end will usually identify the class.

Condition, testing and documentation

Medium-voltage cable that has never been energized is the cleanest lot. Cable that has been in service is considered on its history: age, storage, whether it was ever faulted, and whether test records exist. Reels that have been stored outdoors, uncovered, in Mississippi sun for years will have jacket damage even if the insulation is sound.

  • Unused reels from cancelled or redesigned projects
  • Overstock from a substation or feeder upgrade
  • De-energized cable with documented service history
  • Partial reels with known remaining footage
  • Copper tape shield, concentric neutral and lead sheath constructions

Handling and loading

Medium-voltage reels are heavy and often large-diameter, so loading details matter as much as the cable itself. Tell us the reel diameter, approximate weight, whether there is forklift or crane access, and whether the reel can be moved to a dock. A quote that ignores handling is a quote that changes on pickup day.

Questions

Medium & High Voltage questions

Do you buy medium-voltage cable that has been in service?

Yes, with history. Age, voltage class, whether the cable was ever faulted and how it was stored all affect the review. If test records or a project file exist, mention them; documentation makes a de-energized lot much easier to place.

What is the difference between concentric neutral and tape shield?

Concentric neutral cable has a helical layer of copper wires over the insulation shield, common in utility distribution. Tape-shield cable uses a copper tape instead and is common in industrial and substation work. The construction changes both handling and value, so identify it on the reel tag if you can.

Can you handle large reels without a dock?

It depends on access and equipment on site. Describe the reel size, weight and what is available — forklift, crane, roll-off — and we will confirm whether the pickup is practical before quoting the cable.
